Pahalgam Terror Attack: A Nation United in Grief and Defiance

Deadliest Civilian Assault in Kashmir in Years Sparks Diplomatic Action, Political Unity, and Nationwide Protests Against Terrorism

In recent times, disputes between India and Pakistan have increased significantly. However, from India's side, and according to the treaties both countries have signed, we believe they must be upheld. This is why, as Indians, we always look for peace. Having disputes doesn’t mean innocent people should be harmed. Deep down, many of us engage in verbal disputes, like during an India-Pakistan cricket match — which in itself reflects the intensity of the rivalry.

But one shocking incident changed everyone’s perspective about these disputes. Killing people based on their religion is not taught in any country. This is why we say terrorism has no religion, because in every faith, there is some form of humanity people uphold. However, this incident destroyed everything and pushed both countries toward a war-like situation — something many extremists on both sides secretly desire.

About the incident:
A band of armed militants entered Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and unleashed indiscriminate gunfire on a group of unsuspecting tourists, killing 28 individuals — two of whom were foreign nationals — and injuring several others. The assault shocked the entire nation and was one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in Kashmir in years.

This attack paralyzed the country and its government, forcing immediate action. India never seeks to start a fight, but if provoked, we are prepared to face the consequences and respond. Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-level Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting and announced several measures against Pakistan. These included suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, closing the Attari-Wagah border for Pakistani citizens, scaling down diplomatic staff in Islamabad, retracting SAARC visa liberalization for Pakistan, and expelling Pakistani military attachés. These steps made it very clear that the Indian government would not remain silent and was determined to seek justice for the victims.

The attack also prompted unity among political parties. The Congress Party urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to summon a special session of Parliament. In a letter to the Prime Minister, they emphasized that at a time when unity and solidarity are crucial, such a session would display our collective resolve as a nation.

As part of its response, the Indian government also banned several Pakistani media channels and YouTube accounts that generated significant revenue from India. The government made it clear that no support, however minor, would be left for Pakistan, ensuring they face the consequences of their actions.

The people of Kashmir also came out in support of the government, strongly condemning terrorism through protests across Jammu and Kashmir. Schools, institutions, and transport services were shut down in respect for the victims. The Jammu and Kashmir government announced ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of those killed and hinted at a special assembly session to address the issue. The entire region united in protest, demanding justice and peace — a powerful message that Indians would not accept such violence and that it was time to respond decisively.
