Freedom of Press: The Price of Truth
Did you ever wonder why and how May 3rd is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day? Why do we need a free, independent, and responsible press today? In a democratic form of government, the press is the fourth pillar that helps in keeping the rulers of the country in check. With information disseminating at a never-before pace, it's necessary to wonder what we are witnessing.
Unfortunately, most news channels are interested in sensationalizing rather than reporting facts, and hence there is widespread spread of misinformation, disinformation, and media manipulation. Not only does it set the public opinion, but also it destroys credibility of the media. Other media outlets are interested in gaining popularity rather than journalistic integrity, and this has extensive implications.
Safety for journalists is also a major priority. From 2006 to 2024, more than 1,700 journalists were killed globally, and dozens more disappeared. These men and women put their lives on the line to bring us the truth, and at a personal sacrifice. Their sacrifice reminds us of the value of press freedom and the cost of exercising it.
The arrival of artificial intelligence has both opportunity and challenge. AI can be used to fact-check and audit information but also to produce and disseminate deepfakes and disinformation. With the age of digital media, literacy in the media has never been more important. We need to learn how to critically scrutinize information, question sources, and check facts before believing or sharing them.
Free press is the pillar of an advanced democracy, giving the citizens an opportunity to make informed choices and hold the leadership accountable. With press freedom, we are able to ensure that people who have power are kept on their toes and made accountable to the public about what they do.
On World Press Freedom Day, let us recognize the crucial role pressmen have in delivering us facts. Let us appreciate media literacy during this age of computers and the Internet. By embracing a culture of fact-based journalism and critical thinking, we can strive to be an active and engaged citizenry.
The cost of truth is not only the monetary cost, but the journalists as well who put their lives at risk to bring us the news. As we move towards an equal and just society, it's crucial that we preserve and protect press freedom so that the fourth pillar of democracy continues to be free and standing.
